NUFFIELD FARMING ‘NEXT-GEN’ DAIRY SCHOLARS 2025 ANNOUNCED
  • 18 March 2025

The Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust 2025 Next-Gen dairy scholars have been announced and, this year, are being supported by the national dairy industry education charity The Trehane Trust.

Next-Gen dairy scholars for 2025 are Isabelle Deacon from Lancashire, Joe Lyall from Cumbria and Lewis Gibbin from Carmarthenshire. The Trehane Trust will provide funding for two scholars, with the Elizabeth Creak Charitable Trust providing funding for a third scholar.

Next-Gen dairy scholars will take part in a 30-day study programme in summer 2025, visiting dairy farms and businesses across the UK. They will develop a broader understanding of the industry and have the chance to build networks and identify future opportunities.

Their Scholarships will culminate at the 2025 Nuffield Farming Conference in Aberdeen, where they will present learnings and experiences from their scholarship.

The 2025 Nuffield Farming Next-Gen dairy Scholars, in more detail, are:

Isabelle Deacon

Lancashire-based third-generation dairy farmer Isabelle is studying for a BSc in Agriculture at Myerscough University Centre. She is currently responsible for calf rearing and herd management and hopes eventually to take over the 400-cow herd. She recently completed the RABDF Entrepreneurs in Dairying course and is looking forward to expanding her knowledge by visiting a range of farm systems and businesses.

Lewis Gibbin

Harper Adams University student Lewis grew up on a dairy farm in Carmarthenshire and is currently undertaking a placement at Huddlestone Farms. A committed Young Farmer and member of Holstein Young Breeders, he hopes to bring new ideas to drive growth on his home farm. During his scholarship, he hopes to learn more about sustainable, profitable farming practices and success drivers.

Joe Lyall

Joe grew up on a dairy farm in Cumbria and is currently studying for a MEnvSci in Environmental Science at the University of Manchester. He is currently undertaking a placement year as a Land Management Projects Assistant at the Rivers Trust and hopes to continue in a role that works alongside farmers after he graduates. Joe is looking forward to building connections with dairy farmers across the country and learning more about the relationship between farmers and environmental NGOs.
